Since May 2016, Susan G. Komen® Great Plains has trained 27 leaders as part of its Promise Me program, including eight Spanish-speaking leaders. Promise Me is derived from the Komen Promise to end breast cancer and encourages women to take responsibility for their own health and well-being, especially related to their breast health. Promise Me aims to increase the number of women screened, and over the long-term, decrease mortality rates from breast cancer. Currently the program’s focus is to educate and refer women over 20 years of age in Douglas County for appropriate screening, especially uninsured and other underserved women.
Volunteer Promise Me leaders participate in a two-hour training session to learn about breast health basics, program goals and guidelines, and breast health resources available to women. Volunteer leaders host small group discussions with women sharing key messages related to breast health. They receive a small thank you for their time in educating and encouraging participant action. Participants that receive a screening following a session are eligible for a small incentive.
