Encuentro de la Mujer Sana (Healthy Woman Summit)
The first Encuentro de la Mujer Sana was held in 2013 at the Mahoney Park Lodge in Ashland and the second event was held May 14, 2015 at the St. Benedict Center in Schuyler. The Summit provides primary and preventive health education for Latinas from area communities, especially those with low-incomes and no insurance. Because research highlights that there are specific linguistic, cultural, spiritual, emotional and economic needs of this population, the event is culturally tailored to provide the information needed to be proactive and empower Latinas to make healthy choices. Some of the topics include Intimate Partner Violence, Mental Health, Nutrition and Healthy Eating, Healthy Self-Esteem and Breast Cancer Awareness. All the topics were discussed in the light of the concept of “Mujer Sana” (Healthy Woman). The entire summit is conducted in Spanish by bilingual and bicultural speakers, facilitators, and staff.
The 2015 Summit was a collaboration between UNMC Center for Reducing Health Disparities and Maritza Andrade, a student in the Great Plains Public Health Leadership Institute. For more information, contact Maritza at the Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Department, 402-529-2233.
