The OneWorld Screening and Treatment Program, funded by Susan G. Komen® Great Plains, provides clinical breast exams, mammograms or other screening tests, and coordinates breast cancer treatment for OneWorld patients who are not eligible for the Every Woman Matters Program and would not otherwise be able to afford these health services. OneWorld’s patient population is very diverse; 70% of patients are best served in a language other than English, with Spanish as their primary language.
Five area health systems are offering reduced fees to One World for mammogram services. Treatment for patients diagnosed with breast cancer will be coordinated through OneWorld’s partnership with the Hope Medical Outreach Coalition.
In addition, One World’s Patient Navigation and Educational Outreach Program, uses various methods to educate women (with a special focus on Hispanic women) about breast cancer and the need for regular breast exams and mammograms. The program uses the services of a Patient Navigator, distributes educational materials through both “in-reach” and “outreach” activities, and utilizes radio public service announcements (PSAs). The grant funds provide health care services to women who may otherwise go without, due to their inability to navigate the healthcare system or receive educational materials that are culturally appropriate.
